New Concept of Wearable Batteries with Solar Charger

                    Recently, KAIST EEWS Graduate School Professors Choi Jang-wook and Lee Jeong-yong, and Professor Kim Taek-soo of the Mechanical Engineering Department, officially announced this new invention on November 14. The research team has successfully developed a new concept battery that can be bent, folded, and charged with solar power.

              Samsung release Galaxy Gear, Apple’s iWatch, and Google’s Google Glass, technological competition is rising for domination of the wearable device market. So the research team paying attention on giving flexibility to batteries based on fabric used for clothes. And for which reason it doesn’t change in spite of repeated movements.

                Initially, polyester fabric was plated with nickel. For each pole, they bond an electrode active material, a thin layer of lithium-phosphoric acidic iron oxide on the positive side and at the negative side they bond the lithium-titanium oxide all these coated for a flexible collector.

                        This collector is used to maintain the fabric’s flexibility that’s why they use collector in it. Then collector is also allowing bending, folding, and wrinkling. It improves on the original battery collector made of aluminum and copper, which easily broke after a few bends.

                        Collector’s frame contains the three-dimensional fabric structure that allows power to be distributed equally regardless of cyclic movements then it making the battery functions smoothly. Even we can fold this battery in 5,000 times, after that also it will work perfectly. The future optimization process also use this collector for showing 2V voltage and 85mAh capacity.

                        This Wearable Battery can be used by organic solar cells. While charging with this type of charger will be wrinkled like clothes. This invention has been published in the online, on 5^th which is a global publication of the nanotechnology sciences.

                        The research school’s Professor Choi gave statement about this battery that is by using this battery, wearable computer technologies will gain in future. It will give a great extent to a new IT generation, with people wearing several small mobile electronic devices.
